Beautiful calas in Mallorca, stunning hidden coves among rugged cliffs

Beautiful calas in Mallorca

Mallorca is full of small, idyllic bays known locally as calas. Often hidden between rugged cliffs and pine forests, these spots feel far more intimate than the island’s larger beaches. Let me take you to some of Mallorca’s most beautiful calas, from photogenic coves in the south to wilder corners in the northeast.

Cala Pi: a long inlet between high cliffs

On the southern coast of Mallorca lies Cala Pi, a narrow, deeply carved bay with turquoise waters and a soft sandy beach. Cala Pi is framed by tall cliffs topped with pine trees, giving you the feeling of stepping into a naturally sheltered lagoon. Perched on the cliffs is Torre de Cala Pi, an old watchtower once used to scan the horizon for approaching pirates. The water here is shallow and gradually deepens, which makes Cala Pi especially popular with families with children.

Parking is available along the public road Carrer Penyes.

Forat s’Almunia: a charming little fishing cove

Forat s’Almunia is an idyllic bay best known for its photogenic fishermen’s huts and boat ramps. For generations, fishermen used this sheltered spot to safely pull their boats ashore and store their catch. The simple wooden huts and ramps offer a glimpse into the past and create an authentic atmosphere. You won’t find a sandy beach here; instead, the bay is surrounded by rocky cliffs where you can look for a flat spot to lay down your towel. The water is crystal clear, making it perfect for swimming or snorkeling. Many consider Forat s’Almunia one of the most charming calas in Mallorca.

Cala del Moro: small but spectacular

Cala del Moro is perhaps one of the most photographed bays in Mallorca. From Forat s’Almunia, you can reach it within minutes via a footpath that connects the two coves. The bay is also accessible from the other side, along a winding path on top of the cliffs. The view here is almost Caribbean: bright blue water, white sand and dramatic rock formations all around. The beach itself is narrow and fills up quickly in the summer months, but early in the morning or outside the high season Cala del Moro feels like a true little paradise.

Parking is available at the large parking lot a bit further away (marked as Parking Caló des Moro/s’Almunia on Google Maps). From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to both Caló des Moro and Forat s’Almunia.

Cala Torta, Cala Mitjana o Sa Duaia and Cala Estrata: unspoiled and wild

In the northeast of the island, near Artà, you’ll find three beautiful calas close to each other: Cala Torta, Cala Mitjana o Sa Duaia and Cala Estrata. The surroundings here, with rolling hills, pine trees and dunes framing the coastline, feel expansive and untouched. It’s also much quieter than at the popular calas in the southeast of Mallorca.

Cala Torta is the largest of the three, with a wide sandy beach where the sea can sometimes be a bit rough. The nearby Cala Mitjana o Sa Duaia also has a sandy beach, but it is smaller and therefore more intimate. Cala Estrata is tucked between higher cliffs; you won’t find a beach here, but there are rocky platforms where you can comfortably lay down your towel.

One of the best ways to explore this area is to hike along these three coves (part of the GR222 trail). You walk from one cala to the next, always with views of the clear water and rugged coastline. Because there are hardly any facilities, the experience still feels authentic and gives you the sense of having discovered a hidden side of Mallorca.

Parking is available on Ctra. Camí de Cala Mitjana (Google Maps 39.7470869, 3.4051344). From here, it’s about a 20-minute walk to Cala Torta. If you follow the trail to the other two calas and then return from Cala Estrata along the dirt road to the parking area, the hike is about 5.5 kilometers in total.

Visit calas in Mallorca with a rental car

The most beautiful calas in Mallorca are often hidden between cliffs and can be difficult to reach by public transport. Renting a car gives you the freedom to seek out the most remote coves and combine several spots in a single day. You can set your own pace, drive from lively beaches to quiet, unspoiled calas through wide open landscapes and discover charming villages along the way. With a rental car you can enjoy a scenic road trip across the island and experience Mallorca entirely your own way. Plus, you’ll reach places you might otherwise miss.

When booking a rental, it’s worth choosing an all-inclusive insurance package. This way you’re fully covered from the start, without having to worry about hidden costs or additional insurances on the spot. If anything happens along the way, everything is taken care of, giving you peace of mind and the freedom to fully enjoy your time exploring the island.
