Best places to eat in Ubud, from local warungs to stylish restaurants

What you can eat on Bali is truly amazing. There are so many restaurants that look inviting and cozy, including in Ubud. That can make it hard to choose, especially when you’re traveling with your family and want to keep everyone happy. During our stay in Ubud, we try several great restaurants where the food is absolutely delicious. In this article, I’ll share 10 of our favorite spots with you

Bali Bohemia

One restaurant in Ubud that’s right at the top of our list is Bali Bohemia. The atmosphere here is fantastic, although it feels more Middle Eastern than Balinese. The restaurant is located next to the Monkey Forest, in Nyuh Kuning. If you sit downstairs, you’ll often spot monkeys walking along the walls of the forest. If you choose to sit upstairs, you might run the risk of a monkey sneaking up to grab some food. It’s usually much quieter upstairs during the day. The kids go for burgers and pancakes and this time, we also opt for a Western meal. The plates are beautifully presented and everything tastes great. The fries are especially a hit. If you can’t get enough of the vibe at Bali Bohemia, you can even stay overnight in one of the colorful Bali Bohemia Huts, right here behind the restaurant.

RM Bunya x Mujur

Are you in Nyuh Kuning and craving Indonesian food? Then RM Bunya x Mujur is the place to be. No trendy presentation here, but a mix of different plates with truly authentic, locally prepared dishes.

Mother

At Mother in Nyuh Kuning, we stop by one afternoon for an ice-cold smoothie after a walk through the neighborhood. On the top floor, you feel surrounded by greenery thanks to the trees growing right next to the building, making you forget that you’re actually looking out over the street. In reviews, I read that the food here is really good and the dishes I see being served look delicious. The smoothies on the menu are packed with surprising ingredients, like salt and oil for example and the ones we order taste amazing. It’s a shame we’ve already eaten, because I’m really curious about the dishes on the menu as well.

Black Sheep

Black Sheep in Nyuh Kuning is open all day and serves breakfast and a variety of lunch options. The salads are generously filled and the pizzas are surprisingly tasty. In the display case, you’ll find all kinds of cakes, cookies, croissants, muffins and sandwiches; something for everyone. The only thing that could use some attention, though it may have been just a momentary issue, is the menu. The ones we are handed are so old and dirty, it really isn’t acceptable.

Sweet Orange Warung

Another restaurant that ranks high on my list of favorite places in Ubud is Sweet Orange Warung. You can only get here on foot or by scooter which keeps the crowds away. We visit this warung while walking the Sweet Orange Walk Trail through the Subak Juwuk Manis rice fields. The walk alone is so lovely and truly a peaceful oasis in the middle of busy Ubud. Sweet Orange Warung offers several seating areas. Covered spots grassy patches and a shaded pavilion tucked away at the back of the garden make it all feel incredibly charming. The dishes we order are absolutely delicious. Highly recommended!

Brick Warung

Another beautiful spot with a view of the Subak Juwuk Manis rice fields is Brick Warung. This warung is located along the edge of the fields which makes it a bit easier to reach. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a bowl of fruit or a coffee with something sweet in the morning. The local lunch dishes also look really delicious. If I were working remotely for a longer period I know exactly where I’d be you’d find me here often.

Warung Pulau Kelapa

For tasty local food Warung Pulau Kelapa is a great choice. There are lots of locals here, which is always a good sign. Pulau Kelapa is located in the northern part of Ubud, a little away from the busy center. Tables with umbrellas and lights are scattered throughout the garden, creating a cozy atmosphere in the evening. The Indonesian dishes are really good and reasonably priced. Be sure to order a few different dishes to share, so you can try a bit of everything. If you like meat, the pork ribs are an absolute must!

Uma Cucina

One evening, when we return late to our accommodation and it’s pouring with rain, we don’t feel like walking far to find a restaurant. That’s how we end up at Uma Cucina, a restaurant with mostly Italian dishes on the menu. Dining here is noticeably more expensive than the average in Ubud, but you definitely get something in return. A warm and stylish atmosphere and truly delicious pizzas, pastas, meat and fish dishes. Not exactly cheap by Balinese standards; our bill for four dishes and seven drinks comes to 974000 IDR. If you can get used to this luxurious and inviting vibe, you might also consider staying overnight at COMO Uma.

Soul Bites

When my son gets to choose a restaurant, he looks for a place with several different burgers on the menu. He picks Soul Bites, a restaurant in the center of Ubud. The staff are very friendly and the menu includes both Western and local dishes. The atmosphere is less cozy than at other places and without a view of the bar, it feels a bit fast food style, but the service and the food make up for it. If you’re craving a tasty burger, this is the place to be.

Casa Luna

Also in the center of Ubud you’ll find Casa Luna, a renowned restaurant that has been around for over 25 years. Casa Luna offers a variety of dishes, but is especially known for its Balinese-style paella. Unfortunately I find that out too late, as I’m already eating the nasi goreng special. Everything they serve here is delicious and the whole atmosphere is very cozy.
