When you think of Sweden, you probably imagine vast, dense forests dotted with large lakes and tiny islands. That is exactly what you’ll find in the Glaskogen Nature Reserve, a stunning area that can be explored in many different ways. How? I’ll tell you all about it!

The Glaskogen Nature Reserve is located in Värmland County, in western Sweden. Established in 1970, it covers an area of about 28,000 hectares. The landscape is vast and hilly, filled with deep forests and numerous lakes: the largest being Stora Gla and Övre Gla.
Wildlife in Glaskogen
Glaskogen is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The chances of spotting moose are quite high, especially if you stay in the reserve for several days. You might also encounter hares, lynx, deer, foxes or badgers. Bird lovers will also be in their element here, as the area attracts many different species, including the spotted nutcracker and the three-toed woodpecker.

At the information centre in Lenungshammar, you can find everything you need to know about the reserve. Detailed maps are available, and the staff can tell you all about the many activities and accommodation options in the park. You’ll also find a very small supermarket, a cosy café and a rental service for bikes and canoes.
Hiking in Glaskogen
Glaskogen is best known for its excellent hiking opportunities. The reserve has an impressive network of over 300 kilometres of trails. You can stay in accommodation near the park and come for day hikes, or choose to spend the night inside the reserve itself. Wild camping is allowed in the area, provided you purchase a Glaskogen Card.

Multi-day canoe trips in Glaskogen
In Glaskogen, you can rent canoes for just a few hours, a full day or even for several days. A multi-day canoe trip allows you to paddle from island to island, setting up camp wherever you like. You can stop as often as you want and sleep almost anywhere within the reserve. Open fires, however, are only allowed at designated fire pits, which are clearly marked on the reserve map.
If you prefer not to rent a canoe or kayak, consider bringing an inflatable kayak or canoe. They are easy to transport and perfect for exploring the many lakes and waterways of Glaskogen at your own pace.

Rent a mountain bike in Glaskogen
In addition to hiking trails, Glaskogen also offers several mountain biking routes. These trails vary from short and easy to long and challenging. Some of the most popular routes include the Glasbruket Tour (18 km), Övre Gla Tour (30 km) and Stora Gla Tour (60 km). Be sure to get proper information at the visitor centre before setting out, not all trails are suitable for beginners!
Fishing in Glaskogen
Another great activity is fishing on one of the reserve’s 80 lakes. You can rent fishing gear at the information centre, but you’ll need to purchase a Glaskogen Fishing Card to fish legally in the area. On the larger lakes, Stora Gla and Övre Gla, having a boat is essential and fortunately, boats can also be rented at the information centre.

Staying overnight in Glaskogen Nature Reserve
There are several ways to stay overnight in Glaskogen Nature Reserve. Wild camping is allowed throughout the park, as long as you have a valid Glaskogen Card. If you prefer more facilities, you can stay at the Lenungshammar campsite, which offers basic amenities in a beautiful natural setting.
