A medieval church

West Kirk dates back to the Middle Ages and served as the parish church of Culross for centuries. It was a modest building, created to bring the local community together for prayer and ceremonies. The church was likely the spiritual heart of the village, where generations of villagers were baptised, married and laid to rest.

Change and decline

By 1633, the condition of the church had become so poor that the parish function was transferred to the Abbey Church of Culross. From that moment on, West Kirk gradually faded into obscurity. The building slowly crumbled into ruin as plants and trees reclaimed the site and the walls began to deteriorate. Although no services were held in the church anymore, burials continued here until the 19th century. Old gravestones and heraldic symbols still bear witness to the prominent families laid to rest at this site, including members of the influential Stirling and Bruce clans.

A mystical graveyard

West Kirk is surrounded by a graveyard where time seems to stand still. Among the weathered, leaning and fallen gravestones lie the memories of local residents and prominent figures from Culross’s history. On gloomy, windy days, the atmosphere feels mysterious and almost ghostly. One of the most striking graves belongs to John Callender, who died in 1664 and his wife Margaret Henderson, who passed away in 1662. Their headstones display family crests that reflect their heritage and social status.

Filming location for the series Outlander

West Kirk is one of the many locations in Scotland where scenes for Outlander were filmed. In the series, West Kirk serves as the setting for Black Kirk, a place said to be haunted by demons. In the story, boys venture there to prove their courage, but many return gravely ill. Villagers believe this is the work of evil spirits until Claire discovers a different explanation. The boys mistake lily of the valley, a poisonous plant, for wild garlic and eat the leaves, with dangerous consequences.
