In Saint-Jean-d’Angély
In Saint-Jean-d’Angély, a small town in the Charente-Maritime department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), an imposing ruin rises high above the surrounding buildings. It is the facade of the former abbey church of the Benedictine Abbey, which was founded here in the 9th century by King Pépin I of Aquitaine. Over the centuries, the abbey was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Today, the ruin stands as a reminder of the rich history of this once powerful site.
History of the Abbey of Saint-Jean-d’Angély
The abbey was built in the 9th century to house the skull of John the Baptist. Centuries later, King Robert the Pious donated a golden, shell-shaped container to hold the skull. This made Saint-Jean-d’Angély an important stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela.
Ruins of the Abbey Church
What immediately stands out as you walk or drive through the center of Saint-Jean-d’Angély is the impressive facade of the abbey church, a structure from the 17th and 18th centuries. The construction was never fully completed, but the ruin still breathes the grandeur of a time when this place was a center of faith and commerce. The tall, sculpted arches and imposing pillars tell the story of an abbey that, despite wars, plundering and the French Revolution, has left its mark on history.
