ArtIstanbul Feshane: art in a former factory hall in Istanbul

In the south of Eyüp (Eyüpsultan), one of Istanbul’s most charming districts, stands the historic building Feshane-i Amire. Originally built in the 19th century as a military factory, this former fez factory has now been transformed into ArtIstanbul Feshane, a new hub for art and culture in Istanbul. I visited ArtIstanbul Feshane during my cycling tour through the city and I was impressed! I’m excited to tell you more about this new cultural venue in beautiful Istanbul.

Feshane-i Amire in the past

Feshane-i Amire was established in 1827 as a workshop for producing fez hats in Kadırga. In 1833, the workshop relocated to Eyüp. It was here that Feshane developed into an important textile factory, producing goods for both the military and civilians. In addition to fez hats, the factory manufactured other textile products such as fabrics for clothing and interiors, military boots, carpets and prayer rugs.

With the introduction of steam engines in 1843, Feshane became a leading weaving mill in the Ottoman Empire. After a devastating fire in 1866, the building was rebuilt and re-equipped with the most advanced machinery of the time. Until 1921, Feshane remained under military control and operated as a factory for military uniforms and fez hats.

Restoration of Feshane

The building has been restored by Istanbul’s municipal heritage team, with great care taken to preserve its unique architecture. Walls and other historical elements have been carefully reinstated, using traditional materials and techniques to maintain the building’s original structure; from the floors to the roof and from the steel columns to the wooden finishes.

From fez factory to cultural center

Feshane now houses over 8,000 square meters of exhibition space, a library with an extensive collection of art literature, conference and workshop rooms and several cozy reading areas. I’m truly amazed as I walk through the massive building. It’s impressive how such a large space has been divided into different areas while still maintaining a strong sense of openness. If you need a moment to take it all in, you can grab a drink or enjoy something to eat at the café, where you’ll find plenty of inviting seating areas.

Art in Istanbul

If you’re in Istanbul and have a love for art, ArtIstanbul Feshane is definitely a place you shouldn’t miss. Combine your visit to this cultural venue with a walk along the Golden Horn, where you’ll be treated to beautiful views of the historic waterway and the old city. And don’t forget to explore the charming streets of Eyüp afterward.

Together with a visit to ArtIstanbul Feshane, it’s an experience that absolutely deserves a spot on your list of things to do in Istanbul!
