How to get around Nusa Lembongan, transport options and tips

Are you planning to visit Nusa Lembongan during your stay in Bali? You will see many posts saying there are no cars on the island. But how do you get around if you don’t want to rent a scooter for example? In this article, I will tell you everything about transport on Nusa Lembongan.

Nusa Lembongan, an island without cars

This is what many blogs say that there are no cars driving on Lembongan. That is partly true, there are indeed no passenger cars. But there are mini pick-up trucks such as Suzuki Carry pick-ups driving around the island with a modified cargo bed. In the back, there is room for 6 to 8 people on two benches facing each other. So Nusa Lembongan is definitely not car free, a mini truck runs on petrol and is therefore still a car.

Different types of Nusa Lembongan transport

Getting around Nusa Lembongan is easy. On almost every street corner, you can find someone to ask if you are looking for transport. Your accommodation can also always arrange transport for you.

Use a taxi

The mini trucks described above are often used as taxis on Nusa Lembongan. When you walk along the main street, there is always a driver who will ask if you need a taxi. We asked several times at the reception if they could arrange a taxi. This way we were picked up at Rocky Fast Cruise on the east side of the island. The same driver also took us to the Yellow Bridge. We walked across the bridge and on Nusa Ceningan a pick-up truck was waiting. At the end of the day, we messaged “our” driver again and he waited for us at the yellow bridge. Everything was very well arranged. Most rides cost between 100,000 IDR and 150,000 IDR.

Rent a scooter

Renting a scooter on Nusa Lembongan is also an option. Keep in mind that a scooter on Bali is actually a motorcycle (over 50cc). Officially, you need a motorcycle license (license A) and an international driving permit. However, these documents are rarely checked, so many people drive without the proper papers on Bali and Lembongan. If something happens, you are responsible for all costs including damage, injury to yourself and injury to others.

If you have the correct documents, rent a scooter and don’t know where to go to find the best spots, a self guided tour might be fun. Using an app on your smartphone, you can follow a specific route around the island.

Rent a bike

I don’t see it very often but it is possible to rent a bike on Nusa Lembongan. And of course not a bike like the one in the photo below, but really good quality ones. Electric or non electric (push bike) both options are available. If you don’t want to cycle around the island on your own, you can join a fun bike tour for example; you will see all the beautiful spots on the island at once.

Rent a private boat

Renting a private boat on Nusa Lembongan is also a good idea, especially if you want to see the island from the water. You can discuss in advance which places you want to visit and where you want to go ashore. Renting a private boat is not only fun for snorkeling but also great for sightseeing. If you want to explore the mangrove in the north of the island, there are separate smaller boats available for rent.

Explore Nusa Lembongan on foot

Maybe the best way to discover Nusa Lembongan is on foot. I love wandering along the main street and looking at the different shops. Especially in the evening when it is dark, everything feels cozy and atmospheric. A drink in between with a snack… If you want to discover quieter places, have a taxi drop you off at a certain spot and continue on foot.
