Are you in Hua Hin and looking to escape the beaches and busy traffic for a moment? In the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park you will find a surprisingly green oasis, the Mangrove Forest Park. It is a wonderful place for a peaceful walk, bird spotting and learning more about nature. As you follow the wooden boardwalks past twisted roots and quiet water channels, you quickly realise how special a mangrove ecosystem really is.

The Sirindhorn International Environmental Park is located in Cha Am, close to the historic summer residence Mrigadayavan Palace. The creation of the park was an initiative of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, who has been committed to environmental restoration and education for many years. By the 1990s it had become clear that the original mangrove forest in this area had been severely damaged. With support from the princess, a large scale project began to restore and replant the mangroves, which eventually led to the establishment of the current educational centre. Today it is a place where nature, research and recreation come together.

Nature and education hand in hand
The Mangrove Forest Park is part of the Sirindhorn International Environmental Park, which is used for both research and education. The aim is not only to show visitors the beauty and importance of mangroves, but also to explain why these ecosystems are essential for the coastline, biodiversity and even local communities. Children can take part in activities such as releasing sea animals or planting young mangroves, while adults can explore exhibitions and follow informative walking routes. It is a place where you learn about sustainability and environmental management in an accessible and engaging way, without it feeling overly instructive.

Walking the boardwalks
If you want to visit the Mangrove Forest Park, you can take a short and pleasant walk along the wooden boardwalks that wind through the area. From the elevated paths you can watch crabs scuttling through the mud and hear birds singing as they hide among the mangrove trees. Along the route you will find information boards that help you understand the plants and animals you encounter. During our visit a new boardwalk was under construction, but most of the existing paths were easy to walk. They eventually lead to a viewing tower with a beautiful panorama over the mangroves, the inland hills and the coastline.

Stray dogs in Mangrove Forest Park
One tip for your visit, try to avoid the mangrove forest just before or after sunset. When we walk along the unlit road in the park after dark to meet our Grab driver, we are suddenly surrounded by about ten aggressive stray dogs. During the day there are plenty of walkers and joggers and everything feels completely safe, but once it gets dark the dogs become more active and territorial. It leads to a few genuinely frightening moments for us. Plan your visit during daylight hours so you can explore the area calmly and without unexpected encounters.
Visiting with a rental car
If driving on the left side of the road in a foreign country does not bother you, it may be an even better idea to explore Hua Hin and the surrounding area with a rental car. You can then visit the Mangrove Forest Park at your own pace and park near the beach, where one of the boardwalk entrances is located. Choosing a rental car with full all risk insurance gives peace of mind, as you are fully covered without having to worry about additional policies.
