Pont-Aven: picturesque village in southern Brittany, France

In the south of Brittany, in the Finistère department, lies Pont-Aven: a charming village surrounded by green hills and forests. The Aven river flows through the village and along its banks, you’ll find old, atmospheric houses and mills. The village has a rich artistic history, with various artists coming here for inspiration. If you’re vacationing in this part of Brittany, a visit to Pont-Aven is definitely worth it.

History of Pont-Aven

Pont-Aven has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was still a small fishing village. In the 19th century, it became known as an artists’ colony, particularly thanks to Paul Gauguin, who stayed here in the summer of 1886. Artists flocked to Pont-Aven for its beautiful light, the idyllic Aven River and the untouched nature. This artists’ movement, known as the Pont-Aven School, brought innovative techniques and styles that later influenced the art world. The picturesque character of Pont-Aven is still present today, making it a beloved destination for artists and art enthusiasts.

Influence of tides in Pont-Aven

Although Pont-Aven is about 10 kilometers from the coast, the tide definitely has an impact here. At low tide, boats are left high and dry on the riverbed. For photography enthusiasts, it’s highly recommended to visit Pont-Aven both at high and low tide, or stay a little longer in the village so you can experience both moments. It provides completely different views each time.

Parking in Pont-Aven

Parking in Pont-Aven is easy at Parking du Bel Air on Rue des Abbès Tanguy. However, during the high season, it may occasionally be full in the middle of the day. Try visiting Pont-Aven earlier in the day or later in the afternoon to enjoy a much quieter experience.
