Saint-Quirin in the French Vosges, from medieval churches to Roman ruins

In the French department of Moselle (Grand Est) lies the charming village of Saint-Quirin. With only 800 inhabitants, this village exudes a rustic, almost sleepy atmosphere, making it a true hidden gem in northeastern France. I visit Saint-Quirin during a road trip through the Vosges, where I discover several beautiful places and sights. Saint-Quirin is one of those special places and is proudly listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

History of Saint-Quirin

Saint-Quirin is situated in a picturesque valley, surrounded by gently rolling hills and dense forests. The village is named after the Roman martyr Saint Quirinus who, according to legend, was buried nearby. Especially in the early Middle Ages, when the area was marked by many conflicts, the village’s sheltered location was strategically very advantageous. Its hidden position offered safety and protection, while natural springs and fertile lands were available nearby.

Église Saint-Quirin

The oldest and most impressive sight in Saint-Quirin is undoubtedly the Romanesque church of Saint Quirinus (Église Saint-Quirin). This 12th-century church is a masterpiece of medieval architecture. What immediately stands out are the two bulb-shaped towers, connected by a walkway. Inside the church, you can find beautiful details, such as stunning vaults and ancient frescoes. Experts consider this church an architectural gem.

Chapelle-Haute

On a hill just outside the village stands Chapelle-Haute, a modest chapel that is accessible on foot and offers a beautiful view over Saint-Quirin. The small chapel was built in the 16th century and features simple, yet charming architecture with stunning stained glass windows.

Croix Guillaume

Close to the village is an archaeological site from Roman times called Croix Guillaume. Here, you can see the remains of an old Roman road and a cross that gave the site its name. In the 3rd century AD, this was an important stopover along the ancient Langres-Strasbourg route, before the Saverne pass. The area where the remains are found was inhabited until the mid-3rd century AD. The site is an important reminder of Roman influence in the Vosges.

Source miraculeuse

In the centre of the village, you will find the Source miraculeuse, a natural spring that, according to local legend, is said to have healing powers. It is one of the village’s sights, but also a peaceful spot where you can enjoy the sound of flowing water.

Overnachten in Saint-Quirin

I stay in Saint-Quirin at Z-Lodges; a cozy cabin in the middle of the forest, with a large terrace. If there is no availability here, there are several other nice accommodations to be found in Saint-Quirin or nearby.

Saint-Quirin is not far from other beautiful places in the Vosges. From Saint-Quirin, you can take a trip to the town of Sarrebourg, famous for its impressive stained glass windows by Marc Chagall in the Église Saint-Blaise. Do you like hiking? The nearby Parc Naturel Régional des Vosges du Nord offers vast forests and picturesque villages, perfect for a day trip. You can enjoy beautiful views from the 30 meter high Rocher de Dabo. The Plan incliné de Saint-Louis-Arzviller is definitely worth a visit, it is the impressive boat lift on the Marne Rhine canal. Rent a bike and explore the houses of the former lock keepers along the old canal in Vallée des Éclusiers.
