Weather in the Algarve, Faro in February: my personal experience

A visit to the Algarve in February offers a pleasant escape from the cold weather found in many other parts of Europe. During my stay in this southern region of Portugal, I enjoy the mild climate and the peaceful atmosphere that make the Algarve so special at this time of year. We stay at Martinhal Quinta do Lago, near Faro and in this article I share my personal experience with the winter weather in the Algarve.

Mild and sunny weather in Faro

In February, temperatures in Faro, the capital of the Algarve, average between 11°C and 18°C. During my stay, I experience temperatures around 18 to 19 degrees, with hardly any wind. The occasional light breeze is actually quite pleasant, since the sun’s warmth is constant throughout the day. With these temperatures, it’s perfectly comfortable to walk around Faro with bare arms and legs in February. Especially when you’re out of the wind or being active, like hiking or cycling.

Cool mornings and evenings

Although the days are pleasantly warm, mornings and evenings can feel quite cool. It’s wise to bring an extra layer of clothing for those times. You should also keep in mind that in February it gets dark early, around 6:15 p.m. In my experience, the most comfortable hours in the Algarve in February are between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

So don’t spend those sunny hours indoors for a long lunch. Enjoy it outside instead, so you don’t miss those precious rays of sunshine. Skipping lunch altogether and opting for a sandwich on the go or a light snack on a sunny terrace is a great option, especially if you plan to have an early dinner later in the evening.

Occasional rain showers

During my stay, I experience one rainy day (a real downpour) but even then, the temperature remains pleasant and a denim jacket is enough as an extra layer. Rainy days aren’t unusual in the Algarve during winter, but they’re usually short-lived and quickly followed by sunshine. That’s exactly what happens during my visit: right after the rain, we sit back in the sun for another hour and a half until the next shower arrives.

Advantages of visiting the Algarve in winter

One of the biggest advantages of visiting the Algarve in winter is the peace and quiet. Tourist attractions and beaches are far less crowded than in the summer months, allowing you to enjoy the region’s beauty at a relaxed pace. Accommodation prices are often lower, there’s no need to book restaurants in advance and you’re more likely to have authentic experiences without the usual tourist crowds.

Do keep in mind, though, that many beach bars are closed during the winter season. It’s a good idea to check in advance whether that popular beach café you’ve heard so much about is actually open at this time of year.

Visiting the Algarve in February, what’s the weather like in Faro and the surrounding area?

My verdict: definitely go. I absolutely love spending a week in the winter sun. Even though the days are shorter and the mornings and evenings can be cool, the warm hours in the middle of the day make up for everything.

If you’re hoping to lie on the beach and sunbathe all day, February might not be the perfect time to fly to Faro. But if you want to enjoy pleasant temperatures in an active way (or simply relax and soak up the sunshine on a terrace) then February is a wonderful time to visit the Algarve and the area around Faro!
